Some places look better in photos than in person. The Blue Pond is not one of them.
What Is It?
Shirogane Blue Pond (青い池) is a man-made pond near Biei, Hokkaido. Aluminium hydroxide particles from a nearby volcanic spring give the water its unreal cobalt-turquoise colour. Dead birch trees stand in the water like frozen sentinels, and on a still day the surface mirrors the sky so perfectly you can’t tell where the water ends and the clouds begin.
The Experience
I visited in late October, right at the edge of autumn. The surrounding hills were turning gold and rust, and the bare white birch trunks against that impossible blue felt like walking into a painting. It was quiet — a few other visitors, but no crowds. Just the sound of wind through the trees.
The pond changes colour with the light. Overcast skies bring out a deeper teal. When the sun breaks through, the surface glows almost electric. I stayed for over an hour, watching it shift.
Getting There
About 20 minutes by car from Biei, or a short bus ride from Biei Station. There’s a car park and a well-maintained wooden walkway around the pond. Free entry.
The Verdict
5 stars. Apple used this pond as a default wallpaper for macOS, and honestly, the real thing is better. One of those rare places where nature does something that shouldn’t be possible, and you just stand there trying to believe your own eyes.
